Underground Mining
Underground mining extracts ore through shafts, declines, and drifts using methods such as room-and-pillar, cut-and-fill, sublevel stoping, and block caving, each tailored to the geometry, grade, and rock mechanics of the specific orebody. As a hard skill it requires understanding ground-support design, ventilation requirements, blasting and mucking cycles, and the logistics of moving people and materials safely through confined, often wet and gassy environments. Underground mining is the method of choice for deep, high-grade, or geometrically complex deposits, and demands disciplined adherence to safety culture across every shift to manage the ground, gas, and equipment hazards inherent in the underground environment.
