This Privacy Policy (“Policy”) provides details about how SAE Government Technologies, a Michigan not-for-profit corporation (“we,” “us,” “our”), collects, uses, and discloses personal information we collect via METConn, including METConn.org and related services (the “Services”). This Policy applies to users who reside in the United States and Canada, and it describes your rights under applicable privacy laws. This Policy is part of the Terms & Conditions that governs your use of the Services.

Please note that this Policy applies only to personal information collected via the Services. It does not apply to personal information collected by SAE Government Technologies in other contexts. For SAE Government Technologies’s main Privacy Policy, please see here.

1. Introduction

METConn is a professional networking platform focused on the mobility and emerging technologies industry, connecting professionals in the U.S. and Canada for mentoring, events, messaging, and career opportunities. We respect your privacy, and we are committed to protecting your personal information in accordance with applicable privacy laws.

2. Personal Information We Collect

We collect personal information when you interact with the Services, including when you create an account, participate in mentoring, events, or messaging, or otherwise use features of the platform. This includes:

A. Account and Profile Data

• Name, username, password, email address, phone number and other contact information

• Profile details (industry experience, education, biography, skills, and preferences)

B. Communications

• Messages you send and receive, such as if you communicate with other users via the Services

• Comments and posts within the Services

C. Commercial Information

• Data about your use of our Services, including registration and attendance at conferences, workshops, or other events.

D. Usage and Technical Data

• Device, browser, IP address, cookies, and related browsing data about your use of the Services

• Log data and analytics data

E. Location & Demographic Information

• Location (state/province and country) and device geolocation, interests, career objectives

F. Education & Professional Information

• Educational degrees and certifications, training

• Work experience and current and prior employers

• Social media accounts and connections

G. Audio & Electronic Information

• Audio and electronic information, such as recordings of customer service calls

H. Inferences

• Inferences drawn from any of the information listed above to create a profile about you reflecting your preferences, characteristics, behavior, and attitudes

During registration and in the course of your interactions with us, you may also provide additional data voluntarily. We generally do not collect Social Security numbers, financial account information, or other categories of sensitive personal information.

3. Use of Personal Information

We use the personal information we collect to:

• Provide, operate, and improve our Services, including to provide your membership

• Facilitate networking, mentoring, and event participation

• Communicate with you regarding your account and Service features

• Advertise and promote our membership and other aspects of our Services, including by contacting consumers regarding offerings that may be of interest to them, in accordance with any preferences they have expressed to us

• Conduct analytics and improve platform functionality, our marketing efforts, and other aspects of our Services

• Provide you with effective customer service and communicate with you

• Comply with our legal and regulatory obligations, and enforce our rights and policies

• Detect and prevent fraud or abuse

• For any other purpose identified in an applicable privacy notice, click-through agreement, or other agreement between you and us

We may also aggregate and/or de-identify personal information and analyze those data for statistical or any other purposes permitted by law. When we do so, we take reasonable measures to ensure that the information cannot be associated with an individual, and we maintain and use the information in deidentified form. After it has been de-identified, the information is no longer personal information and is not subject to this Policy.

4. Sources of Personal Information

We collect the above categories of personal information from a variety of sources. Specifically, we collect personal information from (1) you, such as when you communicate with us, create an account on our Services, or otherwise interact with us; (2) from our data processors and from third parties when they provide personal information to us; (3) from public databases, providers of demographic data, publications, professional organizations, and social media platforms; and (4) from cookies and other online identifiers automatically when you use our Services.

5. Disclosure of Personal Information

We may disclose the categories of personal information we collect in the following contexts:

• To data processors who process personal information on our behalf, including data processors who provide data hosting, information technology support, email hosting, marketing and analytics services, and other services for the operation of our business. We impose contractual limitations on our data processors’ use of personal information they collect in conjunction with providing services to us.

• To other members of our Services, if you have an account on our Services. For example, if you create an account on our Services, other members may be able to see your profile on our Services.

• To third party volunteers that support events and interaction between our members

• To third parties at your direction or with your consent

• To third parties to protect our rights, defend or pursue a legal claim, or investigate or prosecute illegal activities

• To government or judicial authorities to comply with a subpoena, court order, governmental inquiry, legal process, legal obligation, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of other users or the public

• To a successor entity or purchaser upon a merger, consolidation, or other corporate reorganization in which we participate, a sale of all or a portion of our assets, or pursuant to a financing arrangement. In this situation, we will seek assurances that the successor entity or purchaser will process personal information collected by us in accordance with this Policy.

We may also disclose aggregated and/or de-identified data to any other entities to the extent permitted by law.

6. Cookies and Tracking Technologies

We use cookies and similar tracking technologies to operate the Service, enhance user experience, measure performance, and deliver personalized content. You may be able to manage your cookie preferences through your browser or device settings. Please note that our websites do not currently respond to the “Do Not Track” signal.

7. Additional Disclosures for U.S. Residents

• Disclosures for Residents of Certain U.S. States

This section provides disclosures for residents of U.S. states with comprehensive privacy laws that apply to SAE Government Technologies (collectively, “U.S. Privacy Laws”). Because SAE Government Technologies is a not-for-profit corporation, not all existing state comprehensive privacy laws apply to our collection of personal information. Further, some portions of this section apply only to residents of particular states. In those instances, we have indicated that such language applies only to those residents.

Data Subject Rights. Residents of some U.S. states have certain rights with respect to the processing of their personal information. Depending on your state of residence, and subject to certain exceptions, these rights may include:

• Right to Access. You have the right to confirm whether we are processing personal information about you and to access your personal information, subject to certain exceptions. Residents of some states also have the right to obtain a list of the specific third parties to whom we have disclosed their personal information.

• Right to Delete. You have the right to request that we delete any Personal Information we have collected from or about you, depending on your state of residence, and subject to certain exceptions.

• Right to Correct. You have the right to request that we correct any inaccurate personal information we maintain about you.

• Right to Data Portability. You have the right to obtain the personal information we have collected about you in a portable and, to the extent technically feasible, readily usable format that allows you to transmit the personal information to another entity without hindrance.

• Right to Opt-Out of Certain Processing Activities.

• You have the right to opt out of the sale of your personal information and processing of your personal information for targeted advertising purposes. However, please note that we do not “sell” personal information or process it for “targeted advertising” purposes in connection with the Services, as those terms are defined by U.S. Privacy Laws.

• You have the right to opt out of profiling of their personal information in furtherance of decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects. Further, Minnesota residents have the rights to question the results of and obtain information about profiling decisions about them. However, please note that we do not process personal information for purposes of profiling in furtherance of legal or similarly significant effects.

• Right to Withdraw Consent. If we have collected sensitive personal information about you with your consent, you have the right to withdraw your consent for such processing. However, please note that we generally do not collect sensitive personal information in conjunction with the Services.

Exercising Data Subject Rights & Authorized Agents. To exercise data subject rights applicable to you, please submit a request by emailing us at [contact@metconn.org]. Residents of some states may also authorize an agent to make data subject requests on your behalf. In such instances, authorized agents may use the same method as you to submit requests on your behalf. Depending on the type of request and your state of residence, we may ask the requestor to provide information that will enable us to verify your identity in order to comply with your data subject request. In some instances, we may decline to honor your request if an exception applies under applicable law. We will respond to your request consistent with applicable law.

Appeals. If we deny your request, residents of some states may appeal our decision by emailing us at contact@metconn.org . If you submit an appeal, please enclose or otherwise specifically reference your initial request so that we may appropriately assess and respond to your appeal. We will process appeals in accordance with applicable law.

Non-Discrimination. We will not discriminate or retaliate against you for exercising your data subject rights. For example, we will not deny goods or services to you, charge you different prices or rates, or provide a different level of quality for products or services as a result of you exercising your data subject rights.

• California Shine the Light Disclosure

California Civil Code § 1798.83 permits California residents to annually request certain information regarding our disclosure of personal information to other entities for their direct marketing purposes in the preceding calendar year. We do not disclose to third parties for their own marketing purposes the categories of personal information listed in California’s “Shine the Light” law, such as names, addresses, email addresses, and telephone numbers.

• Children’s Privacy

Our Services are not intended for individuals under the age of 18. By creating an account via our Services, you confirm that you are 18 years of age or older. Further, for compliance with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998, we do not knowingly collect information from children 13 years of age or younger. If you are a parent or guardian and believe we have collected personal information from your child in error, please contact us immediately at contact@metconn.org so that we can make reasonable efforts to promptly remove all personal information relating to the child from our systems.

8. Canada – Federal & Provincial Law

Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA)
In Canada, PIPEDA governs how private sector organizations collect, use, and disclose personal information during commercial activities. Organizations must obtain consent, limit collection, and allow access and correction rights. 

Provincial Privacy Laws
British Columbia, Alberta, and Québec also have private sector privacy laws that may apply to residents of those provinces. In cases where a provincial law is deemed “substantially similar” to PIPEDA, that provincial regime will apply. 

Quebec Law 25
For users in Québec, specific privacy requirements apply around consent, data access, and retention which may extend beyond PIPEDA requirements. 

9. Security

We implement reasonable security measures to promote the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of personal information in our possession or control. Such measures are designed to protect your personal information from loss, unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction. However, while the security of your personal information is of the utmost importance to us, we cannot fully guarantee the security of any information you choose to disclose online. Any information you choose to disclose to us is done at your own risk. If you create an account on our Services, it is your responsibility to protect your login credentials from unauthorized access or use.

10. Data Retention

We store the personal information we collect for as long as is necessary for the purpose(s) for which we collected it and in accordance with applicable law, our data retention policies, and our legitimate business interests.

When assessing the data retention period, we take into account the amount, nature, and sensitivity of the information, the potential risk of harm from unauthorized use or disclosure of the information, the purposes for which we process the personal information, and the applicable legal requirements.

11. Third Party Links

Our Services may contain links to websites and apps owned by other companies. If you decide to use these links, you will leave our Services. We are not responsible for the privacy practices or the content of such third parties, and we make no representations or endorsements about them. If you decide to leave our Services to access third party links, it will be at your own risk, and you should be aware that this Privacy Policy will no longer govern. You should review the applicable terms and policies, including privacy and data gathering practices, of any other third party when you navigate away from our Services.

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy to reflect changes in law or our practices. When we do so, we will post the revised version of this Policy behind the link marked “Privacy Policy” at the bottom of each page of our websites and provide any additional notice as required by applicable law. To the extent permissible under applicable law, your continued use of our Services after we have posted the revised Policy constitutes your agreement to be bound by the revised Policy.

Whenever this Policy is changed, we will update the “Last Updated” date at the top of this page. We recommend that visitors to our Services review this Policy from time to time to learn of our new privacy practices and changes to our policies.
