Surface mining recovers ore from open pits, strip mines, and quarries using drill-and-blast cycles followed by truck-and-shovel or in-pit conveyor material movement. The method is favored when deposits are shallow, large, or low-grade enough that stripping waste rock is more economic than underground access. Surface operations dominate global production by tonnage and demand strong skills in fleet management, slope stability, and dust and water control.
