Rheometers & Viscometers
Rheometers and viscometers measure the flow and deformation behavior of fluids and soft materials — viscosity, viscoelasticity, yield stress, and thixotropy — as a function of shear rate, stress, temperature, and time. As a hard skill it requires selecting the appropriate geometry (cone-and-plate, parallel plate, Couette) and measurement mode for the material, verifying that measurements are in the linear viscoelastic regime, and interpreting flow curves and oscillatory data to extract actionable process parameters. Battery researchers apply rheology to electrode slurry development, where viscosity and yield stress determine coatability and uniformity, and to solid electrolyte paste formulation and separator coating processes.
