Academic and scientific referencing is the practice of accurately citing prior work — journal articles, patents, standards, and data sets — to acknowledge sources, situate new findings, and direct readers to supporting evidence. As a hard skill it requires selecting the citation style required by the target journal or organization, using reference management software such as Zotero, Mendeley, or EndNote to organize and format citations, and performing systematic literature searches to ensure relevant prior art is captured.
