Light/Optical Microscopy
Light optical microscopy uses visible light and a system of lenses to magnify and image sample surfaces and cross-sections, providing fast, nondestructive observation of microstructure, defects, and morphology at micron resolution. As a hard skill it requires preparing polished or etched metallographic sections, selecting objective magnification and illumination mode (brightfield, darkfield, polarized, DIC), and calibrating the scale bar for accurate measurement. Battery researchers apply optical microscopy to examine electrode morphology, detect delamination and cracking in cross-sections, and screen for lithium dendrite formation in post-mortem cell analysis.
