Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) generates a microplasma on a sample surface using a focused laser pulse and collects the resulting atomic emission spectrum to identify and semi-quantify elements with minimal or no sample preparation. As a hard skill it requires optimizing laser energy and focusing, selecting gate delay and width to minimize background, calibrating with matrix-matched standards, and interpreting multi-element spectra where line overlaps complicate analysis. Battery researchers apply LIBS for rapid elemental mapping of electrode surfaces and cross-sections, screening incoming materials, and field-deployable analysis where conventional wet-chemistry methods are impractical.
