Geotechnical engineering in mining characterizes the mechanical behavior of rock and soil to design stable pit walls, underground openings, tailings dams, and waste-rock facilities. Engineers integrate core data, lab testing, instrumentation, and numerical modeling to predict deformation, set monitoring trigger levels, and design support. The discipline is safety-critical: failures of slopes or tailings facilities are among the highest-consequence events in the industry.
