As a hard skill it involves locating, interpreting, and applying the right standard for a given task, such as ASTM E1131 for thermogravimetric analysis of cathode materials or ASTM B557 for tensile testing of battery enclosures. Working knowledge of ASTM lets engineers specify test protocols correctly, write defensible quality reports, and audit supplier conformance.
