University of Maine at Machias
The University of Maine at Machias, founded in 1909, is a small public college located in Machias, Maine, on the Downeast coast, offering undergraduate programs in marine biology, environmental science, and integrative biology. The Marine Biology program provides rigorous training in marine ecology, shellfish mariculture, aquaculture, and GIS-based spatial analysis, with field access to the tidal waters and coastal habitats of eastern Maine and the Bay of Fundy. The Integrative Biology program combines cellular, organismal, and ecosystem-level biology with applications in environmental science and conservation. A Pre-Engineering pathway allows students to complete foundational coursework at UMM before transferring to an ABET-accredited engineering program within the University of Maine System. Graduates from UMM's marine and biological science programs pursue careers in marine resource management, environmental consulting, fisheries science, and graduate study in ecology and marine biology.
