University of Maine
The University of Maine, founded in 1865 in Orono, is Maine's flagship research university and land-grant institution, home to the Maine College of Engineering and Computing (MCEC). MCEC offers bachelor's degrees in biomedical, chemical, civil and environmental, computer, electrical, mechanical, and surveying engineering, along with computer science, engineering physics, and human-centered technology design—with all engineering programs accredited by ABET. The university's natural sciences departments provide bachelor's and graduate programs in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biochemistry, biology, earth and climate sciences, ecology, and forestry, supported by major research facilities including the Advanced Manufacturing Center and the Climate Change Institute. Research strengths include advanced composite materials, offshore wind energy, forest ecosystem science, Arctic climate science, and spatial informatics, with significant federal funding from NSF, DOE, and USDA. Graduates enter careers in engineering design, software development, environmental consulting, forestry management, data science, and research at the state and national level.
