Swarthmore College
Swarthmore College is a highly selective private liberal arts college located in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, approximately eleven miles southwest of Philadelphia, and consistently ranked among the top liberal arts colleges in the United States. Despite its liberal arts identity, Swarthmore operates a full Bachelor of Science engineering program with concentrations available in civil/environmental, computer, electrical, and mechanical engineering — an unusual distinction for a school of its size and type. The college's STEM offerings further include majors in computer science, mathematics and statistics, physics and astronomy, chemistry and biochemistry, and environmental studies, all benefiting from a 7:1 student-to-faculty ratio and extensive undergraduate research opportunities. Swarthmore's engineering and science students have access to specialized labs covering robotics, embedded systems, solar energy, thermofluid dynamics, and biomechanics, and the college's honors program supports intensive thesis-based research for advanced students. Membership in the Tri-College Consortium with Bryn Mawr and Haverford — and cross-registration with the University of Pennsylvania — substantially expands the range of technical courses and research resources available to Swarthmore students.
