College of the Atlantic
College of the Atlantic is a small, innovative institution founded in 1969 on Mount Desert Island in Bar Harbor, Maine, adjacent to Acadia National Park. The college offers one interdisciplinary degree—the Bachelor of Arts in Human Ecology—through which all students design a self-directed curriculum integrating arts, sciences, and humanities to study human-environment systems. Students may specialize in marine science, field ecology and natural history, biomedical studies and molecular biology, mathematics and physical sciences, climate change and energy, and sustainable business. The college's Seaside Lab and partnerships with the Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory provide direct access to marine ecology research in the Gulf of Maine. Graduates apply their interdisciplinary training to careers in environmental science, marine conservation, sustainability consulting, and graduate study in ecology, biology, and environmental policy.
